This video starts out as we assume any other kayaking-angler enthusiast video would start — with an undulating third person view of a man rigging up some type of fishing lure out on the water.
He seems to be miles away from any care in the world, though he’s just an actual half-mile from shore. Then the video’s subtitles draw your attention to something approaching him from behind. When he finally spins around to discover the encroaching animal that is swimming up to him, he is obviously shocked and confused as he pulls aboard an injured, scared and shivering fully grown…dog.
As you see, the man in the kayak administers some reassuring care for the dog and then begins a quest around the area to find out the owner of the swimming dog.
Then the story gets really weird…turns out, the dog had nearly been killed by a drunk driver while out for a walk with its owner and bolted from the scene in sheer terror.
The owner wasn’t so lucky. Here’s more from the local ABC affiliate:
It happened Saturday afternoon when troopers say Blake C. Talman, 22, was fleeing from another crash scene.
Talman reportedly lost control of his Nissan Altima on State Road 758 north of Glebe Lane when troopers say he struck Donna L. Chen as she was walking her dog on a sidewalk.
According to authorities, the dog was also hit, and it ran away from the scene.
That’s about as awful a post-script as you’ll find here. At least the kayak fisherman saved the dog, who is reportedly okay. If not for him, surely the dog’s life would have ended, too.
Talman, an expectant father, is currently in a Sarasota jail and faces charges including DUI manslaughter and DUI property damage and personal injury.
